Some students may have trouble viewing certain internet links I send. This is usually because your cookies or cache files are causing problems. The solution is simple: just delete them. Find the place where they are located. Usually a browser allows easy access to them so you can delete them. They will cause no problems, except a minor problem explained below.
For those not familiar with the terms I will explain them.
A cache is stored data, a memory file, so later access is faster, since the computer does not have to relocate the address but can simply locate the previous memory file in the cache. It speeds up the computer. For example, you go into youtube and the action is stored as a memory, so the next time you access youtube it's faster.
I myself am not aware of any difference in speed! I often delete my cache files with no noticeable difference. It may be computers and cable connections are so fast today that a cache makes a minute (small, negligible) difference in speed of operation
A cookie in computer jargon is not something you eat with coffee or tea. It's a program code a web site puts on your computer in order to remember you. This is usually done for advertising. It's not the same as spy ware. Cookies are harmless. But some sites will not operate if your cookies are turned off. (They must be able to put a cookie on your computer to operate normally.) Also if you delete your cookies one of them may be a site, such as Yahoo Mail or Gmail that requires a password. In that case, you will have to type your password again, if the password cookie was deleted. In other words, the sign-in site does not remember you so it needs you to identify yourself again.
It is generally agreed that cookies and cache files are harmless. But they can interfere with browser operations. Whenever I go into a page and find problems I know what the main problem is and delete my cookies and cache files to restore operations to normal.
Finally, you should close all windows BEFORE you delete your cookies and cache because otherwise the web site will not register your action and will function as if you had not deleted anything! So you may think the action was useless and never find a solution to your browser problem! So first close all your windows, then delete cookies and your cache and then open the page again. Pages should show normally.
This is true of email too. If someone sends you a file (for example, a youtube embed link) you may not see it until you delete your cookies and cache files.
Hope this helps. Unfortunately, with all this talk of cookies I got hungry.
