LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER
1. Why did the policeman give Alfred Hitchcock a ticket?"Lamb to the Slaughter" is one of the most celebrated shows from the famed Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV series. Though Hitchcock approved all the scripts he directed only a few of the shows himself, including this one.
Telecast in 1958, it starred Barbara Bel Geddes as Mary Maloney, who murders her husband. Bel Geddes would co-star in Alfred Hitchcock's film masterpiece, Vertigo, the same year.
The title is an ironic biblical reference to the sacrificial lamb; only here the killing is not a sacrifice but a murder.
Typically, Hitchcock introduces the show, as he did every week, after the musical introduction based on Gounod's "Funeral March of a Marionette," which became identified with both the show and Hitchcock (composer John Addison quotes the tune during Hitchcock's cameo in the film, Torn Curtain (1966).
Also typical is Hitchcock's sour reference to the show's sponsor, a running gag of the show. Finally, since the moral code of the time required that murderers be punished for their crimes on television and in movies, Hitchock had to explain at the end of each show that the murderer was caught and punished, even though this was not seen in the show itself.
